Michigan Criminal Sexual Conduct Charges - Is Rape the Same as CSC?

Michigan Criminal Sexual Conduct charges (CSC for short) are the category of crimes that encompass most Sex Crimes, including Rape charges. As a Michigan Criminal Sexual Conduct Defense law firm, we are often asked the question "Is Rape the same as Criminal Sexual Conduct? What is the difference between Criminal Sexual Conduct and Rape?"

At common law (basically meaning "in the old days"), one of the basic felony charges was Rape, which in most States meant "the unlawful sexual intercourse with a woman by a man without her consent and by means of fear or force," or sometimes "the unlawful carnal knowledge of a woman by a man, not her husband." But in modern times, in Michigan like in most States, the Legislature has enacted a newer scheme of criminal laws that encompasses all Sex Crimes, known as Criminal Sexual Conduct, which include the crime traditionally known in the old days as Rape, but which also include much more than just that. Here's how it works...
Chapter 520 of the Michigan Compiled Laws is where our modern Michigan Criminal Sexual Conduct (CSC) laws are found. Criminal Sexual Conduct in Michigan is broken-down into four Degrees of Criminal Sexual Conduct:

Beyond the four Degrees of Criminal Sexual Conduct, Michigan has other Sex Crimes that don't fall into those Degrees, which are similar to "attempts" to commit one fo the above crimes like Assault With Intent to Commit CSC Involving Sexual Penetration, MCL 750.520g orAccosting a Child for Immoral Purposes, MCL 750.145a, or are closely related to CSC crimes, such as Gross Indecency or Indecent Exposure charges.
